The St. Lawrence Robotic teams have officially began competing.
The school has three teams building or rebuilding their VEX IQ robots. The teams range from fourth to seventh graders with a total of 32 students involved.
The robotics program is made possible through grants from Guggenheim Life & Annuity, The Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association, Knights of Columbus, Capital Industries, and private donations.
"We are extremely grateful for all the interest and contributions made to our robotics program," says robotics team advisor Susan Schmuelling.
The students enjoy collaborating to build robots. Once built, they work through technical problems and then control their creations to move and perform tasks.
While some students are practicing their driving skills, others are building the extensions for robot base, designing team apparel, taking photographs or constructing with other VEX IQ materials. After the robot’s extensions are
completed, we will begin building the field game pieces for competition practice.
Then on to competitions. The state competition seasonbegins this fall and continues to mid-February.
"We are running on full power to be ready!" says Schmuelling.
